Lawyer killed in carjacking at upscale New Jersey mall

SHORT HILLS, N.J., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- The victim of a deadly carjacking at an upscale mall in New Jersey was identified Monday as a lawyer who recently moved to Hoboken with his wife.

Dustin J. Friedland, 30, was shot as he and his wife returned to their Range Rover just after 9 p.m. in a parking garage at the Mall at Short Hills, the New York Times reported. He died a few hours later in a hospital.

Jamie Schare Friedland, his wife, told investigators she had just gotten into the vehicle and her husband had closed the door for her when he was attacked by two men, sources told the Times. She said the men shot her husband in the head, ordered her out of the car and then one drove away in the Range Rover and the other in another car.

The Range Rover turned up Monday in Newark.

The Friedlands, who met as law students at Syracuse University, bought an apartment in Hoboken two months ago.

Some mall employees said they weren't notified of the shooting and only found out about it after they left work for the night, the Star-Ledger of Newark reported.
