Prosecutor: Former executive killed young couple in suicide crash

LEBANON, N.H., Dec. 12 (UPI) -- The former chief financial officer of PPG Industries was trying to kill himself when he crashed into a car, killing a couple, New Hampshire prosecutors say.

Bail was set at $250,000 Wednesday for Robert Dellinger, 53, of Sunapee, the Valley News of White River Junction, Vt., reported.

Amanda Murphy, 24, and Jason Timmons, 29, of Wilder, Vt., died Saturday afternoon when their car was struck by Dellinger's pickup truck on Interstate 89 in Lebanon, N.H. An autopsy determined the eight-month fetus Murphy was carrying was also killed by trauma.

Dellinger was injured and spent three days in a hospital. He was arrested on release Tuesday.

During Wednesday's hearing, Senior Assistant Attorney General Susan Morell said Dellinger selected a stretch of highway where the median was clear with nothing preventing him from crossing to the other side and heading into oncoming traffic.

"He could have chosen many other ways to kill himself that would not put anyone else in danger," Morrell said.

Dellinger appeared at the hearing by videolink from jail. He spoke only to confirm he could hear the proceedings.

A judge ordered Dellinger, who also owns property in Kansas, to remain in New Hampshire, living in Sunapee, and to surrender his passport.

Dellinger was a vice president and chief financial officer at PPG, a Fortune 500 paint manufacturer headquartered in Pittsburgh. When he left in 2011, an announcement said he left for "health-related personal reasons."

He had also worked for Sprint, General Electric and other companies.

A large group of Dellinger's family members attended the hearing but declined comment.
