NEW YORK, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Police said they're still waiting on autopsy results to determine how a fetus found in a New York City teen's bag died before deciding whether to press charges.
Tiona Rodriguez, 17, of Brooklyn, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court Tuesday to face charges of petit larceny and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. The fetus was discovered by store security at a midtown Victoria's Secret store when employees suspected Rodriguez of trying to steal a $44 pair of jeans.
While searching her bag, security guards made the grisly discovery.
The New York Daily News said police are still awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine the cause of death for the male fetus. They also are not sure if the baby was born at full term or premature.
Depending on the medical examiner's determination, police said Rodriguez may face a homicide charge.
