New York City restaurant waiter explains $1,000 tip

NEW YORK, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A New York City waiter says he was one of the lucky restaurant workers who received an oversized tip from former PayPal executive Jack Selby.

The secretive heavy-tipping campaign across America included a gratuity of $3,000 for an $87.88 bill at an Ann Arbor, Mich., site and arrived in New York City during the weekend where waiters at three restaurants received tips of $7,000, $3,500 and $1,000, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

One of the New York restaurant bills was signed "Tips for Jesus." The other two had "God bless" written on them with the ink-stamped phrase "@tipsforjesus," the name of an online account offering photos of happy restaurant personnel and their oversized tips, with the phrase "Doing the Lord's work, one tip at a time."

Aruj Dhawan, a waiter at Bo's Kitchen in Manhattan's Chelsea district and recipient of the $1,000 tip, told the newspaper the big-tipping diner was Selby, who had been rumored to be behind the random acts of kindness.

Selby, a founder of the online payment system PayPal, made his fortune by selling the business to eBay, the newspaper said.

Dhawan said Selby was one of a party of three that ran up a $111.05 bill and tipped 10 times that amount.

"I said, 'Why tip so much?' He said, 'Just because.' I was told," Dhawan said.
