BRIDGETON, N.J., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A man who may have been seeking warm clothing or a place to sleep died after getting stuck in a clothing donation box in Bridgeton, N.J., city police said.

Police said they received a call about 11 p.m. EST Monday from an individual who spotted the man dangling from a donation box behind the Salvation Army Church, the South Jersey Times reported.

Police said officers freed Joseph L. Hanshaw, 50, of Bridgeton, within several minutes but efforts to revive him failed and he was pronounced dead at a hospital, the Woodbury newspaper said.

Reports indicated it appeared Hanshaw was trying to obtain warm clothing from the box or to get inside to spend the night, and police called it an "unfortunate and tragic death by misadventure."
