N. Calif. homicide suspect arrested by Las Vegas SWAT team

Dec. 10, 2013 at 11:37 AM

LAS VEGAS, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- A man wanted in the slaying of a California woman was arrested Tuesday after a standoff with SWAT officers in Las Vegas, federal marshals said.

William Gardner surrendered shortly before 1 a.m. MST at an apartment complex six hours after the residence was surrounded.

Gardner was wanted in the Nov. 18 shooting death of his former girlfriend, Leslie Pinkston, in the Sacramento-area town of Winters. He allegedly shot the 32-year-old mother while she sat in her parked car, KCRA-TV, Sacramento, said.

Police were called after Gardner allegedly entered the apartment, which was occupied by a man, woman and 3-year-old child. Gardner's relationship to the residents was not immediately revealed.

The occupants said they had not been held against their will and the male and the child left the unit during the standoff, KOVR-TV, Sacramento, said.

Gardner spoke to KOVR by telephone Monday night and said he had his own side to the story of Pinkston's death.

"I know that even if I tell police the full story, the full story is never going to come out," he said. "That's just how the cookie crumbles."
