GAINESVILLE, Fla., Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Delta said it canceled a flight from Gainesville to Atlanta so the airplane could be used for a University of Florida men's basketball team charter flight.

The airline canceled flight 5059 after the team's first plane was grounded due to a maintenance delay, the Gainesville (Fla.) Sun reported.

The team was traveling to Storrs, Conn., for a Monday night game against the University of Connecticut.

Delta spokesman Michael Thomas said that the bumped passengers were accommodated on other flights and given vouchers.

"Delta apologizes to those customers on Delta Connection flight 5059, operated by ExpressJet, who were impacted by the resulting cancellation of their flight," he stated.

The flight, which was full, was initially set for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. and the 50 passengers were booked on different flights.

The last one left Monday, the Sun said.

Many passengers were upset, and some had to drive to other Florida airports for their flights while one person missed a funeral.
