Kristi Edington said she made a purchase at Walmart, a gift for a granddaughter, and bought an item at another store, but her card was declined when she attempted to use it again.
Her husband Rodney went online and learned the reason, KSHB-TV, Kansas City, Mo., reported.
"One of the purchases, at Walmart, had been run through 19 times, and the other purchase had been run through 22 times," he said.
They learned their account was overdrawn by $4,000, and although their bank manually fixed the problems without charging an overdraft fee, Kristi Edington says they have not yet received a confirmation or explanation.
KTSB-TV said the incident was a reminder to follow Federal Trade Commission guidelines for holiday shopping -- guard personal information, especially online; be aware credit card payments offer better guarantees than those of debit cards and monitor bank and credit card statements regularly.
