ST. MARY'S, Alaska, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Four people were killed, and six survived, when a plane crashed near St. Mary's, Alaska, the president of the flight company said.
Jim Hickerson, president of Hageland Aviation, said the Cessna 208 took off from the town of Bethel, Alaska, late Friday afternoon with nine passengers and a pilot, and crashed four miles from St. Mary's airport, about 80 miles northwest of Bethel.
The pilot, Terry Hansen, died in the crash, Hickerson said. The cause of the crash was not immediately determined.
Alaska State Troopers, on snowmobiles, were the first responders to the scene, and the U.S. Coast Guard, LifeMed Alaska and the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center joined the rescue effort, State Trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said.
Mary Afcan, a St. Mary's police officer, told the Anchorage Daily News residents in "a whole bunch of cars and ambulances," also aided, adding Saturday, "The health aides are still there. They had to call in people who used to be health aides ... who could help."
At midnight Friday, the temperature at St. Mary's, a village of about 500 people, was 10 degrees, the Daily News reported.
