CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Two fraternities at the University of North Carolina are under investigation for alleged risk-management violations, a school official said.
The university's Chi Phi fraternity has been suspended by its national chapter for alleged hazing and alcohol violations, and the school is also conducting a separate investigation into the fraternity, The Daily Tar Heel reported Wednesday.
UNC's Pi Lambda Phi also is being investigated for unspecified violations, the newspaper said.
"We always investigate any allegations that come to us about hazing, alcohol or anything else that's contrary to university policy and that is based on our own policies or procedures," Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp said Tuesday.
"There is an investigation (into Pi Lambda Phi) and there are some allegations, (I'm) not going to get into any more details, but yes, the institution is aware of some allegations and they're being investigated," he said.
Chi Phi gained national attention when David Shannon, a UNC freshman, was found dead at a mixed concrete plant in Carrboro in October 2012, but Crisp said that incident is not related to the current investigation of Chi Phi.
"David Shannon's death is continuing to be investigated by the Carrboro Police Department, that is an open and ongoing investigation, we don't interfere with that investigation," Crisp said. "We cooperate with and support that investigation but ... these actions are not directly related to that," he said, adding the current investigation includes allegations made this semester.
