Family: Anti-gay note on restaurant bill a hoax

BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Nov. 26 (UPI) -- A New Jersey family has denied a waitress' claim they stiffed her on a tip and wrote a scolding note on the check because she is a lesbian.

The couple, contacted by WNBC-TV, New York, said they were taken aback when a receipt for their meal went viral online. The credit card slip from Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater, N.J., included a note that appeared to be in a woman's handwriting reading, "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I do not agree with your lifestyle."

The couple, who asked to remain anonymous, produced a receipt for the television station that includes an $18 tip on the $93.55 bill. They also produced a Visa statement that shows they were charged by the restaurant for $111.55.

The server, Dayna Morales, posted a picture of the slip on her Facebook page and the story took off.

Before long, a fund had been set up in her name, Tips for Dayna, that included a PayPal account where people from across the world sent her money, which totaled in the thousands, she said.

Morales, a former Marine, said she would donate some of the proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project, a veterans group.

Contacted after the couple came forward, Morales denied making up the story.

"I don't know, all I know is what I've been saying," she said.

The couple said they have both worked in restaurants and would never stiff a waitress -- and that they are pro-gay marriage and didn't vote for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie because of his stance against it.

The woman said she's the victim of a hoax.
