WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A Republican congressman said Sunday's nuclear deal with Iran comes at a time when the Obama administration should be on the offensive.
Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ala., said the time was ripe for a push for regime change in Iran; however the new agreement does nothing but buy time for the Iranian government by easing economic sanctions.
"Right now, the sanctions are working," said Chambliss, a member of the Senate Intelligence and Armed Services Committees. "They're doing exactly what they're designed to do."
Chambliss said on ABC's "This Week," had pushed Iran's economy to the brink of collapse and raised the level of Iranians' unhappiness with the government. "Instead of easing them, now is the time to tighten those sanctions," he said.
Chambliss said the agreement announced by Secretary of State John Kerry did not include any concrete steps toward dismantling the infrastructure of the Iranian nuclear program and compared it to deals struck with North Korea that were immediately ignored by Pyongyang.
"We have trusted the Iranians before, just like the North Koreans on nuclear issues, and what have we gotten for it?" Chambliss said. "They continue to hide their development of these weapons."
