Shooting suspect killed, SWAT officer shot in Ohio standoff

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Police in Ohio said a shooting suspect was killed and a SWAT officer was shot and injured Friday in a standoff with police.

Officers in civilian clothing -- responding to reports of a suspect in a shooting last week in the Columbus suburb of Grove City involving a woman and a child -- approached the suspect, Danny Thornton, 47, in a shopping center parking lot. Shots were fired and the suspect was shot and killed, a police report said.

The unidentified injured officer was hospitalized for a gunshot wound to the hip, and was in good condition, WCMH-TV, Columbus, reported.

Grove City police reported last Friday a boy, 9, was shot a close range while standing in the doorway of his home, and was hospitalized in critical condition. Police said a woman was shot in a separate but related incident Friday at a dentist's office.

Both victims are expected to survive, Grove City police said.

An elementary school was placed on lockdown During the incident in the parking lot, WCMH-TV said.
