Sandy Hook parents told to brace for release of shooting report

NEWTOWN, Conn., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- A 40-page summary report on the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School will be released Monday, Connecticut's chief state's attorney said Friday.

In advance of the report, Newtown school administrators advised parents of students at the school to "limit media exposure," the Connecticut Post reported Friday.

"I wanted you to have time to think about steps you choose to take to limit media exposure," School Superintendent John Reed said in a letter dated Wednesday. "Depending on the age of your child or children, I think it is advisable to carefully consider what you want them to see, hear or read."

"We all understand that for the children who were directly affected by this tragedy the release of the report and the upcoming anniversary can carry a very personal meaning," he added.

The letter also offers parents tips to spot signs of distress in their children and on how to talk about traumatic events.

Anthony Bivona, superintendent of the neighboring Brookfield schools, said his district has offered counseling and other support services to Newtown.

Twenty Sandy Hook students and six staff members died in the shooting on Dec. 14, 2012.
