ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Five children were pulled from an icy Minnesota pond early Thursday after a car they were in left a road and plunged into the water, officials said.
The driver, a 23-year-old woman, was able to leave the car after it left a highway exit ramp and went into the water in the Minneapolis suburb of St. Louis Park but the children -- ages 1, 5, 5, 6 and 7 -- remained in the submerged car for more than 20 minutes, KARE-TV, St. Paul/Minneapolis, reported.
The children were unresponsive when they were pulled from the car, and were hospitalized.
Minnesota State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said the water in the pond is 8 to 9 feet deep, and passersby attempted unsuccessfully to rescue the children.
The relationship between the woman and the children has not yet been determined, and investigators were unsure whether any of the children in the four-door sedan were wearing a seat belt, ABC News said.
