COLVILLE, Wash., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- A Colville, Wash., boy was sentenced to 176 to 220 weeks in a juvenile detention facility for plotting to kill a school classmate, court records said.
The sentence was handed down Wednesday by Judge Allen Nielsen in Stevens County Courthouse. Nielsen noted at the hearing that releasing the 11-year-old boy, sitting in shackles in the court room, would be a disservice to the community
The unidentified juvenile was convicted in February of intent to murder a female student at Fort Colville Elementary School. A co-conspirator, also a student at the school, has been serving a similar sentence after pleading guilty to similar charges in April.
The two boys smuggled weapons into the school with what police said was an intent to stab the female student, with the co-conspirator prepared to shoot anyone who tried to intervene.
"I have no doubt the plot was real, and that it was going to result in the death of one of more students," said prosecuting attorney Tim Rasmussen after the sentencing hearing.
The boy sentenced Wednesday, who turns 12 this week, will serve his sentence at the Echo Glen Children's Center in Snoqualmie, Wash., The (Spokane, Wash.) Spokesman-Review reported Thursday.
