AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- George P. Bush, son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, has filed to run for Texas land commissioner, one year after announcing he would run for statewide office.
Bush, 37, a Fort Worth lawyer, is the nephew of former U.S. President George W. Bush, the grandson of former President George H.W. Bush, and the great-grandson of former U.S. Sen. Prescott Bush, R-Conn.
His mother, Columba, is from Mexico, so he is regarded as a Hispanic candidate, the Houston Chronicle said Wednesday.
"He has strong support for two distinct reasons, family ties and because the Republican establishment realizes that Texas is an increasingly Hispanic state, and if the Republican Party is going to be successful, they need to have Hispanic candidates," said Mark P. Jones of Rice University's political science department.
After the younger Bush declared his interest in seeking statewide office in November 2012, his father sent emails to potential donors, the newspaper said.
Campaign finance reports indicate he has raised over $3 million.
