RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 19 (UPI) -- Two-time Democratic U.S. presidential candidate John Edwards is teaming up with his former law partner and soon will practice law again, Edwards said.

Edwards and former partner David Kirby formed Edwards Kirby law firm, which will have offices in Raleigh, N.C., and Washington, WRAL-TV, Raleigh, reported Monday. Edward's daughter, Cate Edwards, and her law partner, Sharon Eubanks, will join the new firm.

"It is a privilege to practice again, and we want to take on cases that, through litigation, change social inequalities in favor of the greater good," Edwards said in a statement. "In building Edwards Kirby, we sought a team that has championed the causes of economic and social equality in court and in hundreds of communities across the country."

"His life's mission, I think, has been to help people," Cate Edwards said of her father in an interview Monday with WRAL. "Edwards Kirby is founded for that purpose -- to give people a voice, to give the disenfranchised a voice."

The move marks John Edwards' first entry into the public eye since being acquitted last year on campaign finance fraud charges.

Edwards was accused of channeling campaign money to an aide to keep Rielle Hunter, his pregnant mistress, out of public view during the 2008 presidential campaign. A jury cleared him on one charge and couldn't reach a verdict on five other charges.

Edwards' wife Elizabeth died of cancer in December 2010.

Edwards and Kirby's earlier practice focused on personal-injury law.
