Waitress stiffed because she's a lesbian

BIRDGEWATER, N.J., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- A New Jersey waitress who was stiffed on a check because she's gay has received tips and support from across the world after her story went viral on Facebook.

Dayna Morales, 22, who served a tour in the Marines and works at Gallop Asian Bistro in Bridgewater N.J., was working Wednesday when she approached the family of four. Upon introducing herself as Dayna, CNN reported, the mother allegedly said "I thought you were going to say your name is Dan."

Morales served the family of four and handed them the bill for $93.55. In return, the woman, who the restaurant declined to identify, wrote "I'm sorry but I cannot tip because I don't agree with your lifestyle."

Morales posted a picture of the receipt on her Facebook page and it was picked up by the group Have a Gay Day. As more people read her account donations began pouring in from as far away as Europe, Africa and Australia, CNN reported Saturday.

In total she's received about $2,000, which Morales said she plans to donate to the Wounded Warriors Project. The restaurant's management said they will match her donation and give it to a local LGBT advocacy group.

"I was offended. I was mad at first, and then I was more so hurt," Morales said.

She said she never brought up her sexual orientation, meaning the note was "their pure assumption."

"It's 2013. This shouldn't be going on," she said.
