Coast Guard offloads $40 million in cocaine seized in Caribbean

PORT EVERGLADES, Fla., Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Cocaine valued at more than $40 million, seized earlier in this month, was delivered to Port Everglades, Fla., Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced.

The drugs were seized in the central Caribbean Sea Nov. 2 and Nov. 6 in a U.S.-led security effort intended to disrupt cocaine shipment through coastal routes in Central America, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

About 1,300 pounds of drugs were tossed from a speedboat when a Coast Guard team aboard a Royal Dutch Navy ship spotted the boat Nov. 2. Four days later the same team spotted another speedboat and arrested three suspected smugglers with approximately 1,500 pounds of cocaine aboard, Coast Guard Lt. Meghan Gies said.
