JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A Florida woman sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing a warning shot during a domestic dispute is seeking her freedom pending her new trial.
Marissa Alexander of Jacksonville won an appeal and faces another trial next year. Her lawyer will ask a court Wednesday to release her on bail, ABC News reported.
Alexander's conviction became controversial because she was found guilty in spite of invoking Florida's Stand Your Ground law. George Zimmerman, who killed an unarmed black teenager, was acquitted, while Alexander, who is black, received a long prison term for aggravated assault even though she did not fire at her then-husband and testified that he had physically assaulted her and was threatening to kill her.
