Greenfield police Maj. Derek Towle said Elizabeth Roberts, 56, apparently killed herself, the Indianapolis Star reported Sunday.
Roberts had been arrested in the death of her husband, Gary Roberts, 57, at their home. She claimed she shot him because he had threatened to kill police officers en route to their home.
Court documents indicated two days before the shooting, Gary Roberts said he wanted "to end it all."
When Elizabeth Roberts told her husband police were on the way to the house to investigate a large number of weapons and explosives he kept in the basement, she said he began loading ammunition into guns. She told him she would shoot him to prevent him from harming others and, she said, he handed her a gun and told her to shoot him. She did, firing one bullet into his chest, killing him.
She was released from jail Oct. 3 after Hancock County Prosecutor Michael Griffin said he would not try her because she had acted "in defense of others."
