Crash in Indianapolis kills van driver, injures 13

INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A church van was hit by a car that ran a red light in an Indianapolis crash that killed the van driver and hurt 13 other people, police said.

The van, carrying 14 children and four adults from Jesus House of Prayer Temple, was struck at an intersection about 8 p.m. Sunday, WISH-TV, Indianapolis, reported.

Police said the van had a green light as it traveled through the intersection and was struck by the other vehicle.

"He [the driver of the car] just cut right in front of us," a passenger, whose name wasn't reported, said. "The van just flipped on over, and we were worried about the kids."

The injured were taken to Riley Hospital for Children at Indianapolis University Health, WISH reported. A 7-year-old was reported in serious condition and the other victims were later released from the hosital, WAVE-TV, Louisville, Ky., reported.

Police said the driver of the car ran off after the collision but was later detained. Investigators said alcohol may have been a factor.
