The headstone was dedicated Friday at the grave site of Christian Choate, a 13-year-old from Gary whose body was not discovered until two years after his death, WGN-TV, Chicago, reported.
He was buried in Ridgelawn Cemetery in Gary in September 2012 in a casket, vault and grave site donated by the cemetery. The grave had been without a headstone until people around the country read about the boy's death and donated money to buy the marker.
Christian's father, Riley Choate, and his stepmother, Kimberly Leona Kubina, had abused him and kept him locked in a cage for two years prior to his death.
He weighed less than 50 pounds when he died in April 2009 and his parents buried him in a shallow grave near their home. His body was discovered in May 2011.
Riley Choate was sentenced to 80 years in prison. Kubina is serving a 35-year sentence.
