Man charged with double slaying cleared by surveillance cameras

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- A young Los Angeles-area man has been cleared of killing his ex-girlfriend and another woman because surveillance cameras give him an alibi, prosecutors say.

A judge dismissed the charges Tuesday against Justin Marquis Scott, 20, of Compton, the Los Angeles Times reported. Scott was arrested soon after Crystallyn Nguyen, 18, and Dora Dawson, 64, were shot Oct. 8.

Dawson, 64, was the grandmother of Nguyen's new boyfriend, who was wounded. Investigators said Dawson was trying to protect her grandson when she was hit.

Surveillance cameras from two Compton shopping centers showed Scott was elsewhere when Nguyen and Dawson were shot.

Scott told the Times the days he spent in jail were difficult, that he spent much of his time crying in his cell. He also said he gave Inglewood police a complete accounting of his movements on the day of the killings.

"I didn't do it," Scott said. "And I wouldn't be here right now if I did."
