Matthew McDowell, 40, was ordered held in lieu of $350,000 bail, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
Erin Ziemendorf's body was found Sunday. Police in Kenosha said McDowell told them Sunday he killed Ziemendorf accidentally during an argument and then drove her body to Chicago.
Ziemendorf, 30, of West Allis, Wis., was the mother of a 5-year-old son. The Rev. Ari Mattson of Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Milwaukee said she was a lifelong member of the congregation.
"Erin was always with her son, supporting him and loving him," Mattson said. "She was always smiling and pleasant and kind. The words I've been hearing since the news broke are about her being sweet and kind and good and happy."
McDowell allegedly told police he and Ziemendorf got into a violent argument and she attacked him with a corkscrew. He said that during the fight he heard something snap and discovered he had broken her neck.
In a panic, he allegedly said, he then put the body in a duffel bag and drove to Chicago.
