The school's sports teams have used the term for Native Americans as their nickname for years, but the all-student editorial board voted 14-7 to withhold its use in the school newspaper, noting it is considered derogatory by many, English teacher and newspaper adviser Tara Huber said.
An unsigned editorial said the decision was made because "the evidence suggesting that Redskin is a term of honor is severely outweighed by the evidence suggesting that it is a term of hate."
Another unsigned editorial, by the seven who supported continued use of the term, was also published, the news website philly.com reported Monday.
