PERRY, Ohio, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- The six people killed in a collision with a police car in Ohio have been identified as an Iraqi couple and their four daughters, officials said.
The car driven by Eid Badi Shahad, 39, was hit broadside by the police car early Friday, killing everyone in the vehicle, The Columbus Dispatch reported. The other victims were identified as Shahad's wife, Entisar W. Hameed, 31, and the daughters, Shuaa Badi, 16, Amna Badi, 14, Ekbal Badi, 12, and Lina Badi, 2.
The driver of the police car was injured.
Perry Township Police Chief Robert Oppenheimer said the police officer was responding to a robbery report and had his lights and siren on. Video from the dashboard camera showed the officer was proceeding through an intersection where the green light had just turned yellow.
Badi had apparently jumped a red light and then come to a complete stop in the intersection.
"Whether he saw the cruiser coming or he realized he ran the red light and was going to back up, we'll probably never know," Oppenheimer said.
Investigators said no one in the family was wearing a seat belt and the 2-year-old was not in a child safety seat.
Relatives and friends told the Dispatch the family moved to Columbus five years ago, coming from Iraq by way of Syria. The couple also have five sons.
Badi was employed by FedEx.
