The fire in the old convent of St. Joseph Hill Academy, in the Arrochar neighborhood of Staten Island, forced a nun, Sister Regina Gegic, to leap from a second-story window to escape, the Staten Island Advance reported Friday.
Vincent Calder, 19, was charged with arson, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and criminal trespass, each as a hate crime. Christopher Sasso, 19, and Diego Tuso, 19, were arrested on burglary, criminal trespass and criminal mischief charges, a New York Police Department spokesman said.
Sister Regina suffered a broken back in the escape, but from her bed at Staten Island University Hospital credited "angels [who] were holding my legs" for her escape.
