The garbage truck was moving north on Harlem Avenue at about 12:40 p.m. when it struck and crushed the car, which was moving east on Harrison Street, the Chicago Tribune reported.
The car and the truck's cab erupted in flames that were eventually put out by Glenview firefighters, the newspaper said.
The Cook County medical examiner's office said three people in the car died.
The garbage truck driver was not injured.
