"I can confirm that U.S. forces did capture TTP [Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan] terrorist leader Latif Mehsud in a military operation," State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said during a media briefing. "I don't have further details to share about the operation for you at this time."
Mehsud is a senior commander in TTP and was a "trusted confidant" of the group's leader, Hakimullah Mehsud, Harf said.
The spokeswoman said she did not have information on the particulars of Mehsud's capture – such as when and where – because she only received the information just before the briefing began.
The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing of Times Square in 2010 and vowed to carry out an attack on U.S. soil.
The organization also is responsible for attacks on U.S. diplomatic personnel in Pakistan and attacks that have killed countless Pakistani civilians, Harf said.
