Tennessee man, 82, dies of West Nile virus

MURFREESBORO, Tenn., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- An elderly central Tennessee man has died of West Nile virus less than a month after becoming ill with the mosquito-borne disease, officials say.

Marion Rogers, 82, of Murfreesboro, died Sunday after being diagnosed Sept. 19, Gannett Tennessee reported Monday.

The disease can cause inflammation of the brain. By the time Rogers died, he was bedridden, unable to speak and occasionally had to use a ventilator to breathe, his son, Guy Rogers, said.

Two residents of the Nashville area were diagnosed with West Nile last week, health officials in Davidson County said. Both patients have recovered.
