Arraignment sought for marathon bombing suspect in MIT officer's death

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Massachusetts prosecutors said they want a warrant for accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev so he can be arraigned for killing a police officer.

Tsarnaev, 20, of Cambridge was indicted by a Middlesex County grand jury in June in the murder of Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus officer Sean Collier April 18 and also faces charges for allegedly attacking Watertown, Mass., police officers in a shootout in the early morning hours of April 19, The Boston Globe reported Monday.

"It is the intention of the Middlesex district attorney that the defendant stand trial for these charges in Middlesex County," District Attorney Marian T. Ryan's office said in a statement.

Prosecutors said they would seek a warrant at a hearing Monday in Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn, the Globe said.

"The commonwealth cannot proceed with the arraignment of the defendant until the defendant is physically present," the statement said.

Tsarnaev is in federal custody on charges of planting two bombs that detonated near the Boston Marathon finish line April 15, killing three people and wounding 260 others.

Tsarnaev's brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was his alleged accomplice. The brother died during the confrontation with police April 19 in Watertown. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev eluded police but was found several hours later hiding in a boat stored in a Watertown backyard.
