WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Sunday Iran's real leader isn't President Hassan Rouhani, but Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation," Netanyahu said Rouhani is simply "a servant of the regime."

"[Rouhani's] a clerk. The real leader of Iran who heads this cult that controls Iran, that controls with an iron fist the Iranian people is the Ayatollah Khamenei. He's the so-called supreme leader, in this case aptly named. And he wants nuclear weapons. This is why they're building these underground bunkers and the [intercontinental ballistic missiles] for, and the heavy water reactor for. That's what they want," Netanyahu said.

He said one of his biggest concerns is avoiding a nuclear-armed Iran, which he called the "pre-eminent terrorist regime of our time."

The regime is "participates in the mass murder of men, women and children in Damascus and in the cities of Syria, one that sends terrorists to 25 cities in five continents in the last three years alone, one that calls for the annihilation of Israel, and one that is developing ICBMs ... to reach the United States -- not us; they've already got missiles that can reach us -- reach you," Netanyahu said.
