CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A wildfire kept burning at a U.S. Marine Corps base near San Diego with forecasters warning Sunday that another day of prime fire weather was likely.
Red flag warnings covered much of inland Southern California from Ventura County to the Mexican border.
Forecasts called for another day of high temperatures and low humidity. While Santa Ana winds were dying down, there remained the possibility of gusts up to 40 miles per hour.
The weather was not likely to help much at Camp Pendleton where a fire that broke out Saturday had reached 1,500 acres by dawn Sunday. Several families living on the sprawling base as well as 30 patients at the base hospital remained under an evacuation order.
The fire was 15-percent contained Sunday and more than a dozen aircraft were taking part in the firefighting effort, the Marines said in a written release.
