Rand Paul: Obama to blame for possible government shutdown

Sept. 29, 2013 at 1:07 PM   |   Comments

WASHINGTON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said Sunday President Barack Obama can't get everything he wants in the Affordable Care Act.

A conservative crusade to defund the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, has been met by resistance from the Democrat-controlled Senate, which said any spending measure that doesn't include funding for act won't be acceptable.

The House voted Saturday night to delay the healthcare overhaul for one year as part of the spending bill that would fund the government through December.

The stalemate threatens a government shutdown, which would go into effect midnight Monday if the two sides can't agree on a spending bill.

In an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation," Paul placed the blame of a potential government shutdown squarely on Obama's shoulders.

"The president's the one saying, 'I will shut down government if you don't give me everything I want on Obamacare,' " Paul said. "That, to me, is the president being intransigent and being unwilling to compromise."

"I've said all along it's not a good idea to shut down government... but I also think that it's not a good idea to give the president 100 percent of what he wants on 'Obamacare' without compromise," he added. "Our new compromise is not getting rid of his signature achievement, but delaying it to make sure that it doesn't totally destroy the insurance market in our country."

The Senate is scheduled to meet 2 p.m. Monday.
