Judith Oakes, 48, was arrested in August and resigned from the Rialto school system in San Bernardino County a short time later, KCAL-TV, Los Angeles, reported Thursday. Investigators say she is believed to have been stealing money children paid for school lunches for the past seven years, possibly making off with as much as $3 million.
Police have not released any videotapes, although they say they have the evidence. Reports have said Oakes was videotaped concealing cash in her underwear at least twice.
"Obviously she had access to large sums of money and she was able to possess those large sums of money and get them out of the building," Police Capt. Randy De Anda said.
Investigators said they also found large amounts of cash in Oakes' possession at the time of her arrest.
Oakes, who had been with the Rialto schools for 25 years, was making $60,000 a year when she resigned.
