NEWARK, N.J., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Vice President Joe Biden plans a trip to New Jersey to campaign for Newark Mayor Cory Booker, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, the Booker campaign says.

The campaign announced Friday that Biden will be in the state Oct. 11. That's five days before the special election to fill the seat held by the late Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.

No details have been released yet about Biden's schedule.

Booker is leading his Republican rival, former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan. While the race has become somewhat tighter, Booker is still ahead by more than 10 percentage points, The Hill reported.
