NYC man arrested after girl, 3, fatally smothered in pullout sofa

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- New York City police said they arrested a man for endangerment Tuesday, a day after a 3-year-old girl in his care was smothered to death in a pullout sofa bed.

Mohamed Barry, 50, who was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, told investigators he left the apartment for a 10-minute errand Monday, leaving his girlfriend's daughter, Aissante Diallo, 3, and two unidentified girls, 5 and 10, unattended.

Aissante and the oldest girl became stuck inside the couch, and while the 10-year-old freed herself, the younger girl was unable to do so and was likely asphyxiated, officials said.

The victim was taken to Harlem Hospital but could not be saved, the New York Daily News reported.
