SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 23 (UPI) -- A woman involved in a San Jose, Calif., rape trial was arrested on suspicion of offering the victim $30,000 not to testify, court records said.
The unidentified woman who offered the bribe, which was declined, will not be charged until after the rape trial of Geoffrey Chambers, but information about the bribe attempt was given to jurors in the trial, the San Jose Mercury News reported Monday.
Prosecutor Bryan Slater argued the victim's refusal to accept the money was germane to the issue of her credibility in what the newspaper described as a "he said/she said" case.
Chambers, 53, is accused of raping a female relative, then 19, in 2011. The defense has argued the woman made up the story to cover her embarrassment over the encounter.
"This is one of the more complicated cases I've ever heard of," Palo Alto defense attorney Michael Armstrong said.
The trial is expected to reach closing arguments Tuesday, the newspaper said.
