Police checking story missing prosecutor killed, dumped in mineshaft

BELLEFONTE, Pa., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- A missing Pennsylvania district attorney was killed by a Hells Angels member, a source who said Ray Gricar's body is in a mineshaft told the Altoona Mirror.

Gricar, who had been Centre County district attorney for two decades, vanished in 2005. His car was found the next day at an antiques mall next to the Susquehanna River, and his county-issued laptop and hard drive were found months later in the river.

The Mirror's source said Gricar's throat was cut in a killing ordered by a Hells Angel who was convicted of aggravated assault in Centre County in the 1990s and was also an FBI informant. The source said the body was dumped down a mineshaft that has also served as a disposal site for four other bodies and for weapons and has since been sealed.

Bellefonte Police Detective Matthew Rickard told the Mirror his department and the FBI are checking out the source's story. The source told the Mirror he has not revealed the exact location of the mineshaft because he wants complete immunity from prosecution first.

Ray Gricar has been declared legally dead. His nephew, Tony Gricar, said the family has had to deal with reports his uncle has been seen and with false leads about what happened to him.

"We've heard pretty much all the theories that anyone's ever come up with," he said.

When allegations that Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky had molested boys were investigated in 1998, Gricar made the decision not to pursue the case. The Sandusky case became a national scandal several years after Gricar vanished.

Gricar announced in 2004 he would not run for another term as district attorney and planned to retire from practicing law.
