"With a heavy heart I must tell you that Officer Rod Bradway has died serving his city. Please keep him and his family in your prayers," said IMPD Chief Rick Hite.
Police said Bradway responded to a distrubance on the Northwest side after hearing screams coming from the Eagle Pointe apartments.
A suspect was also shot and killed, police said, though it was unclear if Bradway fired on the suspect, or if backup officers did.
Officers gathered at Wishard Hospital where Bradway, 41, was taken after he was shot, the Indianapolis Star reported.
