SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Several thousand nearly naked runners are expected for a rescheduled run through Salt Lake City, the organizer said, on the day of a major religious conference.
The "Utah Undie Run," an informal run that attracted about 4,000 runners in their underwear last year and was scheduled this year for Sept. 6, was canceled after founder Nate Porter learned the name infringed on a copyrighted series of runs in 70 cities across the United States.
With a required two-week waiting period for a permit to stage the event, Porter said the newly-named "Utah Underwear Run" will take place Oct. 6, the Sunday of the Latter Day Saints' General Conference, an important event in the Mormon calendar.
The runners will pass Temple Square, site of the conference, the Salt Lake City Tribune reported Thursday.
"As long as we're peaceful about it, there shouldn't be an issue," Porter said, although the newspaper reported the Salt Lake City Police Department has expressed concerns it may prove difficult to protect the runners and the conference-goers at the same time.
