MIAMI, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- A Miami-area man killed his ex-girlfriend and her daughter Wednesday, and then was involved in a deadly crash while fleeing before killing himself, police said.

Antonio Feliu, 48, fatally shot himself in the wreck of his car, The Miami Herald reported. Maritza Medina, 47, who was returning home after dropping her daughter off at school, died in the crash on Route 27 in Broward County north of Miami.

Investigators say Feliu shot Vivian Gallego Martinez, 51, and Anabel Benitez, 28, in the apartment the mother and daughter shared in South Miami Heights.

Feliu took off, setting off a lengthy police chase that ended with the collision on Route 27. Broward County sheriff's deputies said he fired at least one shot at them.

Medina's daughter told WSVN-TV her father came to her school at noon.

"I said 'goodbye, mom,'" the daughter said, describing her last view of her mother. "You never really know when you are going to see her for the last time."

Police said Feliu had a history of traffic problems and one arrest for drunken driving. But they said there was no record of domestic violence with Gallego Martinez.

Investigators were trying to determine what triggered the killings.

"It's been a long day, a tragic day," Miami-Dade police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta told WFOR-TV. "A lot of families that are mourning at this point."
