Cheo Jennings, 39, was arrested after he allegedly tried stealing a bag of poultry from a store in Franklin Township last month. Police said Jennings instigated a fight with the store owner after the owner pursued him in the parking lot, The (Newark) Star-Ledger said Monday.
Court papers state Jennings brandished a knife but said it was in the closed position during the fight, and he told officers he only displayed it as a means to get the store owner away from him.
Superior Court Judge Robert Reed denied a petition by Jennings' lawyer to drop the $75,000 bail and release the suspect on his own recognizance, citing his full-time employment by a local staffing company and his wife and three children.
Reed denied the request and declined to lower the bail amount, citing Jennings' criminal history, which includes multiple contempt citations for failing to obey court orders.
