NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Microsoft founder Bill Gates topped the annual Forbes list of richest U.S. residents released Monday for the 20th consecutive year.

Gates, with a net worth of $72 billion, was followed by the perennial No. 2, Warren Buffett of Berkshire-Hathaway with $58.5 billion, and Larry Ellison of Oracle with $41 billion. Two Koch brothers, Charles and David, four Walton heirs to the Walmart fortune and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who made his fortune, now believed to be $31 billion, with the news service bearing his name, rounded out the Top 10.

Forbes said the rich did well during the past year. The average net worth of those on the list is $5 billion, up by $800 million in a year and the highest ever.

The minimum to get into the Top 400 is currently $1.3 billion, with 15 people tied for 386th place. That's high enough that 61 people worth $1 billion or more did not make the cut.

Forbes put the total net worth of those on the list at more than $2 trillion, an amount the magazine said is approximately the GDP of Russia. Gates' net worth is about five times the 2013 GDP of Iceland.
