In its 8 p.m. EDT update, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said the center of Manuel was about 35 miles north-northwest of Manzanillo on the Pacific coast and the storm had top sustained winds of 40 mph.
Manuel was moving northwest at 9 mph.
A tropical storm warning was in effect for Zihantanejo to Manzanillo, and a tropical storm watch was posted west of Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes.
Manuel was expected to produce 10 to 15 inches of rain over portions of the Mexican states of Guerrero and Michoacan, with as much as 25 inches possible in some places.
