McCaul: Obama should have gone to international community on Syria

Sept. 15, 2013 at 1:14 PM   |   Comments

WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Democratic Congressman Chris Van Hollen said Sunday he agrees with President Barack Obama's response to Syria's alleged chemical weapon attack.

He said the situation in Syria has defused because of Obama's credible threat.

"I look at results. And this result could not be more in line with the president's objective. In fact, we've gone beyond just deterring the future use of chemical weapons to a plan to actually destroy Assad's chemical weapons stockpile," he said on Fox News Sunday.

Van Hollen said Obama has so far succeeded.

"The president had a clear objective: stop Assad from using chemical weapons. In the last six days, we have accomplished that and more," he said.

Republican Congressman Michael McCaul, who also appeared on the show, said there wasn't interest from the American people in intervening.

"But this is what I've been arguing all along is we should have been going to the international community to help with this issue, not go it alone," he said.

Their comments came as the United States and Russia agreed on a deal to inspect Syria for chemical weapons.

Inspectors are set to be on the ground by November.
