Surfing teen bitten by shark on Florida's east coast

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A 13-year-old Florida girl has been treated for minor injuries after she was bitten by a shark on the east coast of Florida, officials say.

Beach patrol Capt. Tammy Marris said the teenager was on a surfboard in about 3 feet of water at New Smyrna Beach when she was bitten on the heel, the Orlando Sentinel reported Thursday.

The girl was treated at the beach, Marris said.

Based on the teeth marks, the shark was estimated to be about 3 feet long.

The incident was the seventh reported shark bite this year, The Daytona Beach News Journal reported.

Bait fish swimming near the shore are said to have lured the sharks closer to beachgoers.

Two men were bitten at the same beach Saturday, one on the shin and the other on his foot.
