N.J. newspaper owner: SarahPAC violated 9/11 photo copyright

NEW YORK, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- A New Jersey newspaper company sued Sarah Palin's political action committee Friday for copyright violation for using an iconic image from Sept. 11, 2001.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in New York by the North Jersey Media Group says the photograph was used "to promote Sarah Palin and to raise money for SarahPAC," Newsday reported. The company said its reputation has been "irreparably damaged."

The photograph was taken by Thomas Franklin, a photographer for The (Hackensack, N.J.) Record. It shows three New York City firefighters raising a flag in the ruins of the World Trade Center, an image reminiscent of the World War II shot of Marines raising a flag on Iwo Jima.

North Jersey Media Group's complaint asks for damages from SarahPAC and an injunction barring it from using the photograph.

SarahPAC did not respond to a request for comment, Newsday said.
